This afternoon, the Lord brought back to my mind a meaningful experience from several years ago. He spoke three simple words to me: “Seize the moments.” Even though time has passed, the memory is vivid, as if it happened just yesterday.

It was early in the evening, and my daughter and my two grandkids were visiting. The house was already bustling with activity, and to add to the lively atmosphere, my daughter was also babysitting my eleven-month-old great-niece. The energy in the room was high, and describing it as lively would be an understatement.

My granddaughter was absorbed in watching a movie, her attention fixed on the screen. Meanwhile, my great-niece, Paisley, played noisily with her toys, her joyful sounds filling the air. My daughter relaxed on the couch, engaged in conversation, while my grandson was busy with a game of his own. From my seat across the room, I quietly observed all the movement and noise, taking in the lively scene that surrounded me.

Then, a simple yet profound moment unfolded. Paisley crawled to a bookshelf and, with curiosity, turned on my iPod. Instantly, worship music began to play, shifting the entire atmosphere. The loud noises faded away, and a gentle peace settled over the room. The children continued to play, but now with a quiet calmness, as if the music had ushered in a new sense of tranquility. The tangible presence of God filled our home, and I found myself pausing to take a deep breath, grateful to bask in His presence.

In that instant, I once again heard the words God had been speaking to me for weeks: “Seize the moments.” In the midst of our busy world, finding quiet time with God or His Word can be difficult. We live in a society defined by a “microwave, drive-thru” mentality—always rushing from one thing to the next, with little time to pause or reflect. A few weeks ago, I began to consider this reality more deeply.

Life is busy. Work is busy. Ministry is busy. In such a hectic world, I wondered how I could continue to carve out intimate time with God. Perhaps you feel the same way, overwhelmed by the never-ending demands of daily life.

If we truly desire to live as overcomers, spending time with God is not optional. It is just as vital as attending to our responsibilities in family and work. All these areas must be managed and given attention. So, in the midst of the busyness of life and family, the question remains: How do we carve out quiet time with God?

In response to the overwhelming pace of life, I began to pray and ask God to show me how to cultivate time with Him amidst the demands of everyday responsibilities. His answer was simple yet profound: “Seize the moments.” But what does this look like in practical terms?

Instead of searching for long, uninterrupted periods of time, we can embrace the value of brief intervals throughout our day. There are many small windows of opportunity that we often overlook. For instance:

  • During the drive to and from work, or while running errands, we can turn our attention to God, using that time for worship or prayer.
  • When the house is quiet and we find ourselves alone, even for a short while, we can use that peacefulness to connect with God.
  • While waiting in the car line to pick up the kids, we can spend those minutes praying or meditating on Scripture.
  • Sitting in a waiting room for an appointment presents another moment to focus our hearts on God.
  • Even standing in line at the store can become an opportunity to reflect, pray, or give thanks.

We all have moments like these woven into the fabric of our daily routines. Each one is a chance to pause, to be still, and to spend precious time with God. By recognizing and seizing these moments, we can deepen our relationship with Him, even in the midst of a busy life.

Once the Lord showed me this insight, I began to look at these moments as a gift within my day where I could spend quality time with God. I no longer struggled to find additional hours, instead I sought out the moments.

Instead of feeling pressured to carve out lengthy periods of uninterrupted time, I realized that each brief interval throughout my day held special value. These moments became opportunities—given by God—to pause, reflect, and connect with Him. Whether during a commute, waiting in line, or enjoying a rare moment of quiet, I intentionally embraced these times, making them a central part of my spiritual routine. By shifting my perspective, I discovered that quality time with God did not depend on the length of time, but on the intention and focus I brought to these moments.

Each morning, as I drive to work, I intentionally use that time to worship God or pray about the day ahead. Instead of letting those minutes pass by unnoticed, I now view my commute as a valuable opportunity to connect with Him. Throughout my workday, whenever I discover a pocket of free time, I make a point to visit our prayer room and spend a few moments in God’s presence. These brief intervals have become an essential part of my daily routine.

I have established a new habit: whenever I notice a few spare moments in my schedule, I immediately seize them and turn my attention to the Lord. Whether it’s through worship, reading Scripture, or simply offering thanks, I prioritize seeking God in these moments. At first, when God prompted me to “Seize the moments,” I doubted that these short interactions could compare to spending hours alone in prayer. However, I quickly realized that these moments accumulate, creating meaningful time with Him throughout my day.

The more I capture these opportunities to connect with God, the more frequently I experience His presence. As I respond to His invitation, He draws me closer, and I find myself in His presence more and more often. Through this practice, I have learned that the quality of my time with God is not determined by its length, but by my intention and willingness to embrace each moment as a divine opportunity.

Yet, it all begins with seizing the moments.

As life becomes increasingly busy and hectic, our quiet time with God does not have to suffer. The key lies in practicing the art of seizing the moments. Rather than waiting for long stretches of uninterrupted time, we can intentionally look for smaller opportunities throughout the day to connect with God.

Today, make it a practice to seek out moments. Look for times to be with God—whether it’s a brief pause to pray, a chance to worship, or a few minutes to read the living Word of God. When these moments arise, seize them wholeheartedly. Hold onto them and make the most of every opportunity to be present with Him.

By embracing these moments and living them to their fullest capacity, you will find that your time is not only well spent but truly invested. These intentional moments with God have the power to transform the atmosphere around you and within your home. Make a decision to seize every single moment and allow each one to count in your walk with God.
