I have one more thing I want to share with you about my weekend and the lessons I was privileged to learn or be reminded of.
I shared how in the midst of troubling news, my friend chose to worship God instead of allowing fear to overtake her. Of course, that was a big part of her breakthrough. However, there is something else she did or refused to do that played a huge part in the victory she experienced that night.
We were driving as quickly as we could to get her to the ER, where she would be able to be with her parents. There was only one problem. We would have to pass the road where the accident took place. The vehicles were still on the scene as well as the wreckers and police officers.
Marsha had already started worshipping the Lord as we drove near the accident location. She did not want to see the vehicle. She had been told it was upside down on it’s top and she didn’t want to see that image. As we got close to the area, my other friend gently tapped her on the leg to let her know we were about to pass it. Marsha closed her eyes and continued worshipping God.
Why did she do this? She was determined to keep her eyes on God, and she absolutely refused to look at anything that would undermine that. As she put it, she had locked eyes with Jesus and refused to move her gaze.
It reminds me of Peter when he stepped out of the boat to walk on water toward Jesus. I can’t even imagine the faith it took for him to step out of that boat. But he did. And he walked on water as long as he kept his eyes on Jesus. However, when he took his eyes off Jesus and looked at the wind and waves, he began to sink.
Marsha knew that day she had to keep her eyes on God. She could not look at anything else. She could not look at that vehicle and keep her eyes on Jesus at the same time. She had to choose.
We all must choose at some point in our life.
When we are walking through things, hard things, that are demanding our attention, we must decide if we are going to keep our eyes on God and His word, or if we are going to focus on the negative.
She won the battle that night, partially, by refusing to look at the circumstances and continuing to worship God.
I don’t know what you are going through right now. Perhaps it is hard to not look at the circumstances. I understand that feeling, I have been there. However, we must remember the story of Peter. As long as we keep our eyes on Jesus, we won’t sink. The winds may be blowing, the waves may seem like they are going to overtake us – but if we keep our eyes on Jesus, we will not sink and maybe, just maybe, we will walk on water.
My friends, I believe God is trying to take us into a deeper place of trust. A place where we are not moved by what is going on around us. I don’t know about you – but I want to go there. I want an unmovable faith and trust in God. How about you? One thing we must determine to do is keep our eyes on Jesus. Look to Him. Lock eyes with Him and refuse to divert our gaze. Just as my friend did that day. Victory is YOURS! Look only to Jesus.
Thank you for this very timely advice. I followed the advice from yesterday’s post and could have gone and checked the very source of ongoing attack today. This is a very valuable piece of advice. Would appreciate your prayers as I plow through against an onsalught of attacks!
