I was sitting in the small waiting room at the chiropractor’s office, waiting for my appointment. I could hear the muffled conversation of the person ahead of me in the room with the doctor. While I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop, I couldn’t help but hear what he said to his patient. He said, “I know you are struggling with anxiety and fear, but I want you to know that’s not who you are.” The next thing I heard was the patient softly weeping.
Those words, “That’s not who you are,” pierced my heart. It was apparently what she needed to hear that day. It broke something in her. She was afraid this was her life from here on out, and it simply wasn’t true. Not only did it destroy the lie in this woman, but it did something in my heart as well.
Although it has been several weeks, those words remain in my heart.
What you are currently experiencing does not define who you are, nor do your struggles.
If you feel angry or disappointed, that does not reflect who you truly are. It is just where you are right now – if you allow God to, He will change this in you.
If you experience emotions such as anxiety or fear that contradict God’s Word, remember that they do not define you. You are who God says you are, and nothing less.
Today, let’s look at who God says you are.
You are forgiven.
I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake. (1 Jn 2:12)
You are whole.
And you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power. (Col. 2:10)
You are not alone.
For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”(Heb 13:5)
You are victorious.
But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Cor 15:57)
You are Wonderfully Made.
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.(Ps 139:14)
God loved you so much that He sent His only Son to die for you. That is what you are worth to Him. Even when you were in sin – He loved you that much.
God doesn’t tolerate you. No, He loves you deeply and passionately. He longs for your fellowship so much more than you can imagine.
I don’t know what you are dealing with today. Perhaps like the woman in this writing, you are dealing with anxiety and fear that seems to cripple your life. Remember this – that is NOT who you are.
You are who God says you are. The key is believing that truth for yourself.
Remember, the scripture says, the weak say, I AM STRONG. This being true, we are to declare who God says we are. If you feel anxious, declare, “I am at peace, my heart is steadfast.”
If you are feeling angry, don’t lash out. Instead, declare, “I walk in love, and anger does not reside in me. The peace of God lives in me, and I respond to that peace.”
So many people are experiencing challenges that seem to define their entire lives. Where you are right now, if it doesn’t align with God’s Word for you, is not your destination.
Remember this: God will complete the work He has begun in you. He will take you to the other side and help you become all you were destined to be in Him if you continue to trust Him and His Word. That is His promise. Never believe in anything less than His promise for you and your family. Never settle for less than all God has for you. Keep pressing forward in God until the person He designed you to be shines forth. That is my prayer for you today, my friend.
Just read “That’s Not Who You Are.” What and wonderful piece and so true. Thank you for reminding us.
