The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.

Psalm 23

Most people are familiar with the 23rd Psalm. It is one of my favorites.

Just the other day, Breanne shared something with me that she had read online. It talked about why the shepherd anoints the heads of sheep. It was so good. So insightful! Although I don’t know the author, I just had to share it with you today.

Sheep can get their head caught in briers. They can die trying to get untangled. Also, there are flies that torment the sheep by laying eggs in their nostrils. The flies turn into worms. They torment the sheep to the degree that they will beat their heads against a rock. The sheep sometimes die from beating their heads against the rocks trying to get rid of these tormenting flies.

Additionally, their ears and eyes are also susceptible to tormenting insects.

Therefore, the shepherd anoints their entire head with oil. The oil forms a barrier of protection against the evil that tries to destroy the sheep. Then there is peace.

Don’t you just love that? I certainly do!

Do you have times of mental torment? Do you suffer from confusion? Do you feel all tangled up at times? Do you have days when you feel you are hitting your head against a rock?

Perhaps negative or fearful thoughts dominate your mind at times. Do you feel like beating your head against a wall to stop them? Are they unrelenting? Perhaps you should ask God to anoint your head with oil.

I believe it would be an awesome thing to confess over yourself every single day.

His oil, His anointing will form a barrier over your mind. Over your ears and eyes. A barrier that torment cannot get through. A barrier that will enable you to keep your eyes and heart on God and His word. A barrier that won’t allow the enemy to torment you any longer. And there will be peace, just as with the sheep.

Jesus said in John 14:27; Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.

1 Corinthians 14:33 says; For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.

2 Timothy 1:7 says; For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Friends, torment is not of God. It is never from God. God is a God of peace. Jesus gave us HIS peace. Don’t allow tormenting thoughts to overtake you. Ask God to anoint your head with HIS oil daily. Allow His anointing to cover you. To protect you. To give you peace.

Today Father, we ask You to anoint our head with oil, in Jesus name.
