Last week, I shared some thoughts on the word shalom, exploring its significance and meaning. During my study, I encountered another passage where Jesus used the phrase, “Peace, be still.” This well-known story can be found in Mark 4:39.

Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.

In this scripture, Jesus and his disciples were crossing to the other side of the sea when a fierce storm arose. While the disciples panicked, convinced they would perish, Jesus was asleep below deck. In their fear, the disciples woke Him, questioning His concern for their safety. Jesus responded by rising and rebuking the wind and the sea, commanding, “Peace, be still.” Instantly, the wind stopped, and a great calm settled over the waters.

Upon further examination of this passage, I discovered that the word translated as “peace” here is different from shalom. Instead, it is the word siwpaw, which means involuntary stillness, inability to speak, silence, hush, and to calm down. In effect, Jesus was telling the storm to be silent, to stop its raging, and to become calm.

There are many times in our lives when we find ourselves confronted by the enemy’s voice, echoing all around us and stirring up turmoil within our thoughts, minds, and emotions. These voices can come in various forms, often targeting our weaknesses and vulnerabilities. For instance, the enemy might speak to us about lack or debt, amplifying our worries about financial insecurity. Medical diagnoses can also become a source of fear and anxiety, as the words of doctors may cause us to dwell on worst-case scenarios.

The enemy’s voice is not limited to our personal fears; it extends to concerns about our children and their current situations in life. We may find ourselves anxious about their well-being or choices, allowing the enemy’s words to foster doubt and worry. Our own bodies and symptoms can also speak loudly, trying to convince us that we are not healed or that our situation is hopeless. Even our bills can seem to cry out, telling us that we will never escape the grip of debt.

All of these voices, which do not align with God’s Word, speak to us just as the storm spoke to the disciples that day, telling them they would surely perish. These are the storms we face in our daily lives—storms of fear, doubt, and anxiety that challenge our faith and attempt to rob us of the peace that Jesus offers.

Just as Jesus spoke to the wind and the waves, commanding them to be still, we also have the authority to address the storms in our own lives. When we encounter turmoil, fear, or anxiety—those voices that threaten our peace—we can respond by declaring, “Peace, be still.” This declaration is more than just words; it is a powerful proclamation that silences the chaos and brings calm to our hearts.

By saying, “Stop talking to me, hush! Calm down, and be quiet, you cannot speak into my life another day, I silence you now, in Jesus’ name,” we are actively choosing to reject the negative voices and influences that seek to disturb our inner peace. We are refusing to allow these storms to dictate our thoughts, emotions, or future. Instead, we are asserting our faith and trust in God’s ability to bring calm and restoration, just as Jesus did on the Sea of Galilee.

This act of speaking peace is a reminder that we are not powerless against the storms we face. We can stand firm, speak with authority, and experience the great calm that comes from trusting in God’s Word and presence in our lives.

My friend, it is crucial to intentionally silence the voices in your life that do not align with the promises of God. These voices—whether they come in the form of fear, doubt, anxiety, or any other negative influence—should not be allowed to speak louder than the truth of God’s Word. When you recognize these voices trying to take hold, do not remain passive. Instead, refuse to be silent.

Speak back to the storms you face. With the authority that Jesus has given you, command those storms to be still. Just as Jesus spoke to the wind and the waves and brought about a great calm, you too have the authority to address the turmoil in your mind and heart. Use this authority boldly and confidently today. Declare peace over your circumstances, silence the chaos, and stand firm in the promises of God. Remember, you are empowered to bring calm to your life by speaking the truth and rejecting anything that does not come from Him.

When you choose to silence the negative voices and align your thoughts with the promises of God, you will discover the ability to rest in the midst of life’s challenges. Just as Jesus was able to sleep during the raging storm, undisturbed by the turmoil around Him, you too can experience a profound sense of peace, regardless of the circumstances. By exercising spiritual authority and commanding the chaos to be still, you create an environment where fear and anxiety lose their power, allowing you to rest securely in God’s presence. In this place of trust, the storms may rage, but your heart remains calm and steadfast, confident in God’s unwavering faithfulness. You too, will sleep through the storms, just like Jesus.
