I felt strongly that this week we needed to pray regarding the financial struggle many are facing both personally as well as our national debt.
Debt is debilitating. So is lack. Anyone who has had to look at bills and decide which to pay and which to put on hold knows the mounting stress that comes from it.
When Kevin and I moved back to the States after serving overseas for many years, we had almost nothing except two suitcases of very worn clothing and our almost one-year- old baby. Most college kids were better well off than we were.
Thankfully my grandmother had a couple unused rooms in her home and allowed us to live with her. My grandfather had just passed away and it turned into a blessing for her and us. I did all the cooking, cleaning and caregiving for her in exchange for living there. But it was also a precious time with my grandmother in the last years of her life that I wouldn’t trade for anything. God provided.
We returned at the request of the missions organization we had served under for Kevin to become the national director and lead the operations stateside. We were still doing missions work, but now responsible for the missionaries with the organization, raising funds for the organization and running the office—even as we had to raise our own money. Kevin got a small salary, but not a lot.
Now stateside we didn’t need less money—we needed more as it was much more expensive to live in America than China. To say things were “tight” was an understatement. While many of our friends had been building their careers, and some now owned a vacation home and an extra luxury vehicle just for fun, it seemed as if we didn’t have anything for our years of service overseas. It was tough not to be frustrated.

God says, ALL things work together for our good. What we learned during that time was to trust God as our source not the donations or small salary we received. As we pressed in for creative ideas on how to bring in more money, I launched my business that I could do from home. That not only brought in more income but allowed me to be at home to homeschool our kids as they got older. We received other creative ideas. All which took a lot of hard work, but which brought in money we wouldn’t have had otherwise.
There was a season in which Kevin and I were both working around 60-80 hours a week, while our paychecks weren’t reflective of all our efforts. That was frustrating for sure, but we didn’t give up.
We went to the Word and began to pray and declare for turnaround in our financial situation—and things began to change.
Eventually we were able to buy a house—that was a miracle. That was a season in which we didn’t have enough money coming in every single month by a lot. But as we kept praying the scriptures—amazingly, we never missed paying a bill. We had a no-frills budget. We didn’t go out to eat. We only hit the dollar theater on occasion. We didn’t have cable. We didn’t have phones. But as we kept praying the Word, things changed because God honors His Word.
What that very hard season did was increase our faith. We learned our jobs were not our source—God was. We all need to get that mindset now, because crisis will hit—and if we see our job as our source, we will walk with an element of fear.
God owns the cattle on a thousand hills. Ask Him to sell one for you! Ask Him for creative ideas. Ask Him what you can cut in your budget or what change you can make that will free up more cash. As you sit with the Holy Spirit, He can give you wisdom and guidance—and wants to.

God I thank You that You own the cattle on a thousand hills. You have declared that the gold and silver are Yours. With You there is no lack and so as Your child I declare that lack and debt must go. You are able to bless me abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that I need, I and my family will abound in every good work. For You have said that as we have freely scattered our gifts to the poor; our righteousness will endure forever.
So I declare Your Word over my finances and present situation that You will supply seed for us to sow and bread for food that we have no lack. That You will supply and increase our store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of our righteousness. I break off any generational curse of lack over my family and say it can no longer control our outcome.
I declare that my family and I will be enriched in every way so that we can be generous on every occasion, and through our generosity it will result in thanksgiving to God. I declare that as tithers give it is given unto us.
