Friday is our day off. It is usually a day of rest and spending time with God, at least for me. This past Friday was different. So much has been going on with moving into a bigger office so we can expand. During the process, nothing has worked out the way or in the time we hoped it would. It has been quite a challenging few months.
I headed out early to do errands on Friday morning, talking to the Lord as I went. I began to reflect on what had happened in the past few days. I have had several surprises arise, as has Breanne.
A few hours later, Breanne called me. She said, “Mom, I was just thinking about some things.” She said, “This week alone, you received that big tax bill, and then the other unexpected bill that came to you this week…Then I came home Thursday from work ready to cook dinner, only to find that my stove and oven had quit working. I have tried all day to find one in stock, but no one has one, it will take over a week to get one delivered. Plus, just days ago, we found out several things need fixed on our camper.” I responded, “Yes, I was thinking the same things just a couple hours ago.”
You see, I had been the ghost writer for a minister in 2024, not realizing the tax implications that would come with it. In the end, the IRS demanded over 40% of that extra assignment I had taken to add to my savings. What took me months to complete wasn’t accomplishing what I thought it would. It was a shock to say the least. A couple days later, I had another unexpected bill arrive. I had not said anything to anyone but Breanne about them, I simply did what I knew to do and sowed seed toward debt freedom.
As for Breanne, she had worked overtime all last week, trying to make sure everything was taken care of at the new office. She was looking forward to going home on Thursday and cooking dinner for her family. She had shopped the day before to make sure they would have a wonderful meal – only to go home to a stove that would work. Beyond that, days before she discovered a mouse had gotten into their nice new camper over the winter and chewed through some wires which tore up several things and must be fixed. It was not a great week for either of us to say the least.
However, all that being said, the thing I noticed most of all was that Breanne was laughing. I was laughing. Neither of us was negative or disturbed. Later while reflecting on our conversation, I had to smile. I was so proud of her. There was a time when the past week and all its challenges would have sent her into a not-so-good place. She would have been frustrated and disappointed. However, she wasn’t. A scripture came to mind.
You shall laugh at destruction and famine. (Job 5:22)
How can we laugh when challenging times come our way? Because God laughs.
Psalm 37:12-13 says, The wicked plots against the just, and gnashes at him with his teeth. The Lord laughs at him, for He sees that his day is coming.
The Amplified Bible says it like this; The Lord laughs at [the wicked], for He sees that their own day [of defeat] is coming.
The enemy’s day of defeat is coming. That means our day of victory is already complete in Christ. The Bible is clear, no weapon formed against us shall prosper. If we believe that, we can laugh at the things the enemy throws our way. We can laugh because God laughs. God laughs because He knows the enemy is already defeated. That, my friend, is good news.
Can you laugh when challenges come your way?
If not, continue to dig into the Word of God until you are fully persuaded that God is who He says He is. Until you know that you know – a good outcome is coming. We have His Word on it.
