Luke 2:7 is a very familiar story, especially at this time of year. Scripture says it this way, “While they were there, the time came for her Child to be born. And she gave birth to her firstborn, a Son. She wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

During that time, scripture tells us that a decree had been issued requiring everyone to be registered. As a result, there was a flurry of activity everywhere, with people quickly traveling back to their homes to ensure everything was in order. The city was bustling with activity. So much so that Joseph and Mary struggled to find a place to stay. They knocked on door after door, but no one would let them in. Eventually, they found shelter in a corner of a manger.

Today, once again, it is a busy time of year. People are frantically rushing around, trying to find the perfect gifts. Gatherings are scheduled each week, and events and family get-togethers abound. You can see the masses hurrying to take care of everything they feel is necessary. For many, there is a greater focus on gifts and events than on the main reason we celebrate this season: the birth of Jesus.

Long ago, in a time when simple homes lined the dusty streets, Joseph and Mary wandered in search of a place to rest their weary heads. As they approached the doors of humble inns and bustling shelters, They were met with the same disheartening response: “I’m sorry, there is no room for you here.” One can’t help but wonder, is the world any different today?

Revelation 3:20 says, Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and dine with him, and he with Me.

Is this season just a time for us to rush through? Do we even realize that Jesus is once again standing at the door, knocking? He is seeking a place to dwell, and He desires that place to be within us.

When He knocks, will we open the door and make room for Him in our hearts and homes? Or will we, like those from the time of His birth, respond by saying, “I’m sorry, there is no room here. I don’t have time for this right now; I have too much to accomplish”?

We Christians often proudly declare, “Jesus is the reason for the season,” but are we truly putting Him first during this time?

I don’t know about you, but for me, this Christmas season—more than any in recent memory—has required more from me. Perhaps I am just paying closer attention.

I am giving Him more time, not less. I am rearranging my schedule to prioritize Him, rather than trying to fit Him into my already busy life. I am spending more time in His presence and less time worrying about material gifts. I am actively listening to where He wants me to give and what He would have me do.

This has been the most peaceful and joyful holiday season I can remember. It feels like His presence grows stronger with each passing day. Instead of rushing through the holiday season, I am keeping my focus firmly on God, and He is blessing me with His presence and peace.

I share this to say: if this holiday season is stressing you out, if you are rushing around trying to ensure that everything gets done—STOP. Take a moment to listen for His voice. Is He knocking on the door of your heart? Can you, will you, make room for Him? Will you allow Him the most prominent place in your home and in your heart, or will you push Him to the side until you have time for Him?

I encourage you to remember the reason for the season and to put Him first. You will be glad you did.

I know that God wants to fill you with His peace and joy. Will you make room for Him? God desires for you to be blessed and empowered during this season—will you make space for Him?

Jesus is the reason for the season. Oh, come, let us adore Him! Let every heart prepare Him room—even today.
