One night while Bre, my daughter, was at my home, she received a call from Bryson, her son. After the call, she quickly left. I didn’t know what the issue was, only that it involved a bird.

The following day, I asked Bryson what happened. Here’s his story.

The night before, we had a bad storm, with lots of lightening and high winds. When Bryson arrived home, he found a bird nest had fallen out of the tree. There was a little bird on the ground that had fallen out of the nest. He didn’t know what to do, so he called his mom.

One thing you need to know is this, Bre has three big dogs that love to eat birds.

I asked Bryson how in the world that bird survived those three dogs. He replied, “Nana, it was the oddest thing. All three dogs were standing there looking at this little bird, licking their lips like they were about to have a good meal. But that little bird, stood there with his chest puffed out, squawking at those dogs at the tops of its lungs. The dogs didn’t know what to do with it.” He went on to say, “It was a brave little thing, the dogs were afraid to touch it.”

I love that story! I can see it, can’t you? That little blue bird, firmly standing his ground. Chest puffed out, yelling at the dogs to leave him alone – and they did.

That’s how we are to be when the devil comes around.

1 Peter 5:8 says, Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

He is seeking whom he may devour BUT, the Bible says.

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. (1 John 4:4)

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline. (2 Tim1:7)

We must be like that little bird and be strong in the Lord, knowing we are walking in His mighty power. (Eph 6:10) And we must continue to confess the word of God regardless of the giants we are facing at the moment.

Although God has not given us a spirit of fear, there are times for all of us, that we hear news that causes us to feel afraid for a moment. That must have been how that little bird felt when he came flying out of that tree amid a storm and landed at the feet of three huge dogs.

1 Corinthians 16:13 says, Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.

This is the instruction we must follow when the enemy comes our way, hoping to devour us. We must stand our ground. Stand on the word of God. Declare the promises of God. Knowing that God has already had the final say. He has already won the battle for us. Our part is to stand on that truth and refuse to move. When fear tries to overcome us, we must continue to declare God’s truth and stand firm in the face of it.

Always remember, the devil came to steal, kill, destroy and cause fear – but Jesus came that we might have life and life more abundantly. And Jesus left us HIS peace. The peace of God that passes all understanding. That’s what we cling to when we fall. Or when there is a storm that knocks us off our feet. We cling to His unfailing love and faithfulness. Knowing He is always near to catch us and will never leave nor forsake us.

As for the little bird. It survived and is thriving. May this be your year to stand your ground, declare God’s word and possess the promises of God. May this be your year to thrive beyond anything you have imagined.
